The backstory
I was in my early thirties when it happened…
I was newly married, had a prosperous career, wonderful family and friends and all the possibility in the world ahead of me. I had made all the “right” decisions but underneath I felt excruciating self-doubt and anxiety. I was so paralyzed by the fear of making the wrong move that I was frozen in place.
I also had hives. Red, itchy hives with no medical reason for them.
A dear friend asked me one day – what do you want to do? And this question felt impossible. Was I ready to lead myself into the life I have always wanted or was I going to stay in the familiar discomfort I knew?
So I started to focus on myself. A BIG DEAL for a perfectionist and people pleaser.
For most of my life, I consumed the needs and expectations of others and purged the truth to find the love and keep the peace. But I decided – I stopped spinning, chose my life and claimed myself.
What did it mean to choose my decisions?
- It meant accepting and choosing the person I was with for everything that he was and everything that he was not.
- It meant focusing on how I was showing up in my relationships instead of blaming others for my unhappiness.
- It meant giving up the need to always be right.
- It meant telling the truth. And the only person I had to confess to was myself.
- It meant forgiving and loving myself.
